Crocus Counselling
Welcome! My name is Cindy. I’m a highly-skilled and knowledgeable psychotherapist providing individual and couples therapy for over 35 years.

My Approach
My Customized Strategy for your Complex Life: The“T”-Shaped Framework
Broad in knowledge, with roots running deep.
Broad in Knowledge: Having trained and practiced extensively across the vast landscape of hospital-based mental health recovery programs, I can competently draw from a varied and comprehensive toolkit. I have an expansive command of both traditional and modern psychological treatment models including CBT, DBT, Trauma-Informed Care, Object Relations/ Attachment Theory, Mindfulness practice, Jungian (analytical) therapy, and more. There is not much you could bring that is too messy or new to me; You are safe working with a truly Seasoned Generalist.
Roots Running Deep: This speaks to my depth psychotherapy. I will offer you more than a band-aid to surface-level symptoms; I will work collaboratively with you to uncover your underlying patterns, past impactful experiences, and core beliefs that are likely contributing to your current distress.
Clearly, I don't believe in single model of care. Instead, I integrate these powerful, evidence-based models in order to customize a therapeutic experience to meet you exactly where You are. Then I have specific models I draw from most often for depth. They have become my favourites and my specialties:
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT): To help you stop struggling with uncomfortable thoughts and emotions and start moving toward what truly matters to you (deep in your heart).
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT): To quiet your "inner critic" and develop the emotional strength to be kind to yourself when things get hard. And we all go through hard times.
Positive Psychology: To move beyond just "fixing what’s broken" and start building a life where you can actually flourish and find joy, purpose and meaning.
From the Hospital to the Home Office: My new stage
Transitioning after more than 3 decades in the hospital-based mental health environment to my private, home-based practice has allowed me to bring the highest standard of clinical care into a more personal, focused setting. My extensive background gives me the experience to handle deep complexity, while my current practice gives me the freedom to treat you as a whole human being, not a patient or a file number.
Whether you are feeling "stuck," battling self-doubt, or simply looking to move from surviving to thriving, I will present an array of tools to help you find the specific path that works best for you. It’s about empowerment in the present and resilience-building for your future.
Life is broad and varied. Your therapy should be, too.
When 1 + 1 Equals More Than Two: Bridging individual self-awareness and couples’ connection
Relationships are often where our deepest and most painful life challenges show up. My approach to couples counselling is not a separate philosophy; it is a natural extension of my individual therapy style. In individual work, we focus on developing self-awareness, self-compassion, and emotional regulation. In couples therapy, I bring that exact same focus to the space between two people, exploring how two unique internal worlds interact. I specialize in helping couples untangle these complex dynamics, moving away from conflict and toward a shared language of mutual understanding, resilience, and intimate connection.
To guide this collaborative process, I tend to draw on two leading, evidence-based frameworks that bridge individual healing with relational connection:
Imago Relationship Therapy (Hendrix): Just as individual therapy explores how your past shapes your present, this framework helps us look at how your childhood history and early attachment blueprints unconsciously influence your relationship dynamics today.
The Gottman Method: This approach weaves emotional self-anchoring into shared relationship strengths. Using these research-backed strategies, together we can build concrete, actionable communication tools to disarm conflict, deepen friendship, and create lasting emotional safety.
By understanding both of your personal roots, you do not have to reinvent who you are. Instead, we can use this self-awareness gained in individual growth to collectively reshape how you and your partner communicate, heal old wounds, and rebuild intimacy together.
Cultivating the Whole Self: A Triad of Healing
True wellness encompasses the whole person, not just the intellect. I work from a holistic perspective that honours the connection between mind, body, and spirit. For the body, you can learn how to ground your nervous system, listen to your physical tension, and honour where your history lives in your very bones and tissues.
For clients who wish to explore it, I am resolutely comfortable building a spiritual dimension into our therapy process. Whether you frame this as soul care, personal faith, or a deeper existential yearning, together we can gently integrate core values to support your healing and build your inner resilience. From here, your life may be infused with a sense of purpose, and the deeper meaning of your unique life journey.
My practice is built on this philosophy where the integrated triad of mind, body, and spirit is woven into each session, whether we address it explicitly or let it simply guide the work in the background. I’m deeply influenced by Carl Jung’s archetype of the Wounded Healer. I won’t sit before you as a detached, flawless expert. I am a fellow human being who understands and has also experienced the path of psychological and physical suffering.
My Therapy Assistant
You might occasionally spot my dog making a brief appearance on screen. She is a senior pup who sleeps much of the day but may wander into frame sometimes to offer her gentle grounding presence.
A gifted and engaging speaker
Speaking Engagements, Workshops and Conferences:
Facilitating the larger conversation around mental health and wellbeing has always been a vital and joyful part of my work. Over the years, I have valued connecting with diverse audiences through educational presentations, keynote addresses, workshops and conferences. I am always open to new speaking opportunities that champion well-being initiatives. Let’s connect directly to see if I am the right fit for your group or organization.
Client Focus
I am currently providing individual and couples counselling for adults aged 16 and up. I prefer to shift away from a traditional symptom or problem list.
My practice is gender-affirming and welcoming of all sexual identities, religious backgrounds, and ethnicities. It is a safe space.
While my integrated approach is highly adaptable, ethical care means recognizing when a challenge requires a more highly dedicated clinical specialty than I can provide. My practice sits outside the scope of treating primary addictions, primary eating disorders, and primary childhood trauma recovery. To ensure you receive the most effective support, I recommend seeking a specialist uniquely focused on these areas.
Crocus Counselling is not a crisis service. Clients are provided with safety-planning strategies and outside resources at the Intake and Onboarding stage.
I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW: 322410) and the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW: 4111).

Crocus-Minded
The crocus is a potent symbol for my therapy practice because it represents hope, resilience, and new beginnings.
It’s one of the very first flowers to break through the cold, often frozen, ground of late winter and early spring. The crocus reminds us that winter doesn’t last forever - warmer days and new beginnings are coming. Even in the coldest and darkest moments of our life, new growth remains possible.
Despite their delicate appearance, crocuses are hearty little souls that can thrive in harsh conditions.
I believe we are often stronger than we feel and realize in the struggles of the present moment. Like the crocus, we can have the quiet strength to rise above challenges and bloom again. We too can be resilient and have inner strength, yet to be realized.
The crocus bulb rests underground in the dark, gathering energy, waiting for the right moment to burst forth, signalling a re-awakening of itself. A true transformation for the crocus-minded.
